Why do we need CoastConnect?
Why do we need CoastConnect?
The Sunshine Coast is a great place to live, work and play. Our lifestyle is the envy of the world and we want to keep it that way. But we’re growing fast.
The Sunshine Coast:
- is home to almost 300 000 people
- is expected to nearly double in population by 2026
- hosts more than three million tourists a year.
Currently, the Sunshine Coast has the lowest rate of public transport use in south east Queensland. Preliminary transport modelling indicates that without better public transport options, traffic congestion will choke the Sunshine Coast and its communities. Without an efficient public transport system, population growth will result in extra cars, extra trips and gridlock on local roads. This means increased congestion and air pollution. CoastConnect will help manage increasing traffic congestion, make it easier for people to move around the Sunshine Coast and improve the environment. In essence, CoastConnect will deliver a better public transport system while making sure the Sunshine Coast keeps its clean and green reputation.
The benefits of CoastConnect
When complete the CoastConnect corridor will:
- cut bus travel times by almost half between Caloundra and Maroochydore
- improve safety and accessibility for passengers
- provide more reliable connections to recreation and tourist attractions, shopping centres, TAFE, hospitals and business centres
- encourage people out of their cars thereby reducing congestion and pollution — for every full bus of commuters there are up to 40 fewer cars on the road
- enhance the image of the Sunshine Coast as a tourist destination and a business centre
- eliminate the need for users to find and pay for casual parking
- provide a viable alternative to the private vehicle.
